Argybargy Redux? (UPDATED)

leave a comment »

The always-excellent Matt Rowe at MusicTAP posts news, reviews and insightful commentary three times a week on his site, and today’s post got me pretty excited, because it says A&M is planning a reissue of Squeeze’s 1980 album, Argybargy. If you know Squeeze for their few stateside radio hits (“Tempted,” “Black Coffee in Bed,” “Pulling Mussels (from the Shell)”), this is probably the album to dive into. With singles such as “Pulling Mussels” and “Another Nail in My Heart” or concert favorites like “I Think I’m Go Go” (or one of my personal favorites, “Separate Beds”), this is one to get for the serious pop fan.

There’s just one problem: there’s no additional info past the title and the release date. This is a bit of a tricky situation because A&M reissued Argybargy (along with a few other Squeeze titles) in the UK in 2007. And they were something else: all of them had new liner notes and bonus cuts, but Argybargy took the cake, with nine bonus tracks added to the original album and a bonus disc consisting of a live show recorded by the BBC at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1980.

So the question that stands: is this release making its stateside debut, or should Squeeze fans get out their billfolds for another title? More as always when it comes through the pipeline.

UPDATE – 1/20/2009: MusicTAP’s latest post has this set pushed back from March 16 to April 7 and indeed listed as a double-disc set. My guess is it’ll be the same offering as the 2007 deluxe edition in the UK. Still, there’s little reason to get bothered, especially since a) it’s a worthwhile addition to any collection, and will be available without the import price tag, and b) this may indicate some more rumblings in the Squeeze catalogue. As previously mentioned, a slew of Squeeze reissues or vault titles surfaced in 2007 and 2008, and there’d be nothing wrong with more on the way.

More Hendrix to Experience

leave a comment »

My last post touched on the impending Jimi Hendrix Experience reissue campaign from Legacy Recordings, who recently gained distribution rights of the catalog. (The catalog proper is owned by the guitarist’s family company, Experience Hendrix, who had previously licensed the material to MCA/Universal in 1997.)

Now, thanks to Billboard, some more information has sprung up regarding the first wave of material. In addition to the previously mentioned CD/DVD reissues of Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold as Love and Electric Ladyland, a twelve-track compilation of vault material called Valleys of Neptune is set for release, culled mostly from material from The Jimi Hendrix Experience’s last sessions in 1969. Also of note: apparently a CD/DVD release of First Rays of the New Rising Sun, the first vault set released by Experience Hendrix and MCA in 1997, is slated for March 9 as well.

Other projects in the works include a reissue of the JHE compilation Smash Hits (no word on whether it’ll use the UK or US tracklisting – either of which are odd because neither lineup uses material from Axis: Bold as Love), a DVD/Blu-Ray of the JHE’s iconic performance at Woodstock and yet another multi-disc box set, after 2000’s The Jimi Hendrix Experience on MCA.

As always, keep it here for as much reissue and remaster news as you can stand!

An obligatory note on release dates: they’re as always set to change. I base my reports on the excellent work at Pause & Play, the best resource for any music release dates you might be looking for.

In With the Old: 2009 in Reissues

with 4 comments

Good evening and welcome to The Second Disc! Assuming you’ve taken a look at the page where I’ve explained this blog, I’d like to present a list of some of the best catalogue titles released to the public during the past year. This year was just as full of complaints about the demise of the music industry as ever (I guess part of this can be blamed on the general economic malaise gripping us all), but this really seemed to be a great year for reissues and box sets of all sorts.

Two notes before I begin. First, anyone who has befriended me on Facebook has possibly already read this list. I apologize for making you sit through it again. Second, and more importantly, a mini-disclaimer: my enthusiasm for reissues is well known to have manifested into an internship at Universal Music Enterprises, the catalog arm of Universal Music Group, as well as encounters with some great people who have done some killer work on catalog titles. Several of these titles were worked upon by people I have met. I will mark them with an asterisk, lest they be seen as mash notes from a fellow friend/fan/person eager to break into the catalog business. But trust me, I’d give high marks to these even if I didn’t know anyone associated with them.

Now, after the jump, my list – in no particular order but alphabetical: Read the rest of this entry »
