  1. RE: the Barry Manilow set…are we to deduce that “Could It Be Magic” and “I Am Your Child” are the original Bell versions which haven’t been available for over 30 years?

    • RS, I doubt Legacy’s finally given us those tracks, though wouldn’t it be nice? I remain surprised, after all these years, that they weren’t included on the otherwise-superlative last remaster of BARRY MANILOW/BARRY MANILOW I. That said, I should have the Playlist disc sometime soon, and I’ll be sure to report back.

And Mike, do we think this is the Manilow project for which one of our favorite writers, David Wild, was penning notes earlier this year?

    • Received the Manilow Playlist volume today. “Could It Be Magic” and “I Am Your Child” unfortunately don’t appear to be the original versions. The (fairly brief) liner notes are indeed by David Wild, and the mastering is by Maria Triana at Battery Studios. Considering how much good stuff can be found buried on some of the other Playlist volumes, it’s too bad that Barry’s people and/or Legacy’s staff didn’t go the extra mile and include the original Bell versions, “Oh! Julie!” or one of Barry’s other not-on-CD odds and ends. Maybe next time…

      • I’d sooner buy a CD pressing of the original Bell mix than get a compilation with only a few of the versions. Sure, it’d be better than nothing, but “all” usually trumps “nothing” when it comes to reissues I buy.
