A Compilation to Leave You Speechless
Here at The Second Disc, it’s always about the music. The team at Eric Records takes this mission seriously, too: its newest release provides three discs of nothing but music, with nary a lyric to be found.
Complete Pop Instrumental Hits of the Sixties, Volume 1 collates, for the first time on three CDs, every instrumental track that hit the Billboard Hot 100 in 1960. Some of them are chartbusters that we all know and love – Percy Faith’s “Theme from ‘A Summer Place’,” The Ventures’ “Walk – Don’t Run” – while others are rarities by artists relegated to the annals of history, from Duane Eddy and Bill Haley and His Comets to Bobby Darin and Santo and Johnny.
All 81 tracks are remastered from the original source material and, wherever possible, presented in stereo. (This led to at least one track, “Kommotion” by Duane Eddy and The Rebels, presented in stereo on CD for the first time anywhere; another 15 tracks also make their debut on the format.) There are also a few bonus tracks, including some songs that charted in 1960 but were released the year before, and both mono and stereo versions of the theme to the long-running series 77 Sunset Strip. The set is augmented by a 28-page booklet featuring biographical info on each artist and track-by-track release information.
All in all, this looks like it could be a really fun set – and hopefully the first in a series! Order the set here (the set’s out June 21, but those who order it from the label will see their orders shipping around Monday) and look at the track list after the jump.

“House of Rufus” Has Lots of Furnishings
Just in case you were waiting on a track list to buy Rufus Wainwright’s mega-box House of Rufus, the wait is over.
The 19-disc box set, which encompasses all the albums and DVDs the baroque-pop tunesmith has released in his career, is packed with some intriguing extras, too. Many of the CDs are augmented with some sort of bonus tracks, either extra songs that were released as retail exclusives, old or new live performances and outtake material. And there are another four discs of rarities as well: a rarities disc augments more rare promo-only or international bonus tracks with unreleased outtakes, another collates Rufus’ best appearances on soundtracks (including the CD debut of his tune from the Canadian film Tommy Tricker and the Stamp Traveller (1988), one of the earliest professional Rufus performances), a third collects guest tracks and collaborations (including material recorded with his illustrious family, including sister Martha, mother and aunt Kate and Anna McGarrigle and father Loudon Wainwright III) and another collects a clutch of unreleased demos.
It’s certainly a lush package, although one that, at upwards of $260 in the U.S., must be a tough sell for all but the most loaded of Rufus fans. (One could certainly take all the material therein and make deluxe reissues of each of Rufus’ LPs – although the singer/songwriter has criminally never been a sales juggernaut, so this one-shot deal is likely the best bet to obtain all these bonus cuts.)
House of Rufus, limited to just 3,000 copies, can be ordered here for a July 18 release. The full rundown is after the jump.

New Reissues Fit Hip-o Select to a “Tee”
After a few days of shuttering their website for some repairs, Hip-o Select is back with a bang, announcing four new titles ready for order.
The first three we already knew about per our chat with Harry Weinger in May: a trio of titles devoted to the late soul queen Teena Marie. Her second and third albums, Lady T and Irons in the Fire, both released in 1980, are being remastered and expanded by Select.
Featuring production from Teena herself as well as Richard Rudolph, husband and songwriting partner of recently-deceased soul legend Minnie Riperton (“Too Many Colors (Tee’s Interlude)” features vocals from the couple’s daughter, future actress/comedienne Maya Rudolph), the albums were an expansion of Tee’s soul-funk sound established on Wild and Peaceful (1979) and featured her most successful single at the time, “I Need Your Lovin’,” which hit the bottom of the Top 40 in 1980 and was a Top 10 R&B hit.
There’s some interesting bonus material on each disc, too: Lady T is augmented by three mixes of “Behind the Groove,” a Top 10 hit in England. One is the original LP mix of the track that was soon replaced by the more familiar version that kicks off the album, and the other two are unreleased remixes overseen by Rick James in 1980 and John Morales in 2011. Irons, meanwhile, features five newly remixed tracks from Teena’s killer set in Long Beach, California in July 1981. Four of them have been released before, either as bonus tracks from other reissues or as part of the larger show with Rick James and the Stone City Band that was included in the deluxe package of James’ Street Songs (1981).
But that’s not all from either Tee or Select. Hit the jump to read on about two other titles ready to order from the label! Read the rest of this entry »
