Impulse Buys Abound from UMe

with 5 comments

Universal Music Group got off to a great start anthologizing the deep catalogue of Impulse! Records with a four-disc box set from Hip-o Select earlier this year. Today, that catalogue is revisited yet again, in the form of 28 albums from the jazz label’s catalogue collected as two-on-one discs.

The titles are pretty diverse, collecting sets from Duke Ellington, McCoy Tyner, Alice Coltrane, Art Blakey, Sonny Rollins, Milt Jackson and others.

You can order each of the titles on Amazon here and check out the track lists after the jump.

  1. Good stuff. Any idea regarding what masters where used? I assume from whenever the last time each disc was remastered (if that indeed occurred in each case)?

    • I hope to have my hands on some of these soon, Kevin. I’ll report back!

    • I’ve got a couple of these titles now; they’re actually imports, made in the EU. New remastering is credited to Eastside Mastering Studios in Berlin; Matthias Kunnecke and Douglas Payne are producing the series. The eight-page booklets reprint the front, back and gatefolds of the original LPs, but there are no new liner notes – only composer credits and catalogue information. Still, the uniform design is rather nice.

  2. Does anyone know which of these are on CD for the first time? I know Ayler’s last album is for sure (outside Japan, anyway).
