Single CD: Amazon U.S. / Amazon U.K.
In early 1993, David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright created more than one hundred pieces of music by jamming together and recording the results. The trio then honed the pieces at Gilmour’s studio, played them live for 2 days at Olympic Studios in Barnes with additional players (Guy Pratt on bass, Jon Carin on keyboards and Gary Wallis on percussion), returned to Astoria, and worked further with co-producer Bob Ezrin. The resulting LP, after lyrics and vocals were added, was The Division Bell. Rumors abounded of a separate ambient album created from the remaining ethereal instrumentals, but nothing came of it until now. Gilmour and Mason re-entered the studio earlier this year and added further instrumentation to the tracks they originally created with the late Richard Wright. Pink Floyd describes The Endless River as 60% new, with the other 40% drawn from those original 1993 recordings. Gilmour describes the record as follows: “The Endless River has as its starting point the music that came from the 1993 Division Bell sessions. We listened to over 20 hours of the three of us playing together and selected the music we wanted to work on for the new album. Over the last year we’ve added new parts, re-recorded others and generally harnessed studio technology to make a 21st century Pink Floyd album. With Rick gone, and with him the chance of ever doing it again, it feels right that these revisited and reworked tracks should be made available as part of our repertoire.”

ABBA Celebrate 40 Years of “Waterloo” with New Reissue
It may seem trite and ridiculous to Americans, but across the pond there is one competition that’s bigger than any Idol or X-Factor event in the music world: the Eurovision Song Contest. For nearly 60 years, dozens of countries in the European Broadcasting Union send a song and a performer to the live event, and a winner is selected by votes.
Despite the immense popularity of the contest, it’s interesting how few winners achieve true global superstardom. Sandie Shaw won with her signature “Puppet on a String” in 1967, and songs performed by Lulu, Celine Dion and even Katrina & The Waves have taken home the prize. But one stands tall above the rest – the 1974 Eurovision winner, written by Swedish songwriting duo Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus (with manager/partner Stig Andersson) and performed by the duo with their wives, Agnetha Fälksog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. The group was ABBA, the single was “Waterloo” and the rest is history.
Four decades after the quartet’s immense international success (which far outlives the group itself, which disbanded in 1982), the ABBA catalogue machine (which, since 1992’s smash compilation ABBA Gold: Greatest Hits, has never really turned off, with multiple reissues, compilations and box sets being released in the years since) is picking up with a new reissue of the band’s sophomore Waterloo album, among other treasures.
While none of Waterloo‘s tracks stood up to the success of the title cut – a chart-topper throughout most of Europe, a Top 5 hit in Australia and No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 – there were some fan favorites in singles like “Honey, Honey” (a U.S. Top 40 hit) and only-ABBA-could’ve-done-these tracks like “Hasta Mañana” and “King Kong Song.” The U.S. pressing also featured a new mix of “Ring, Ring,” the band’s 1973 breakout single.
As with previous ABBA deluxe editions, the new Waterloo is a CD/DVD set with no new audio bonuses (foreign language versions and alternate remixes are the order of the day) but a wealth of archival video content, including – what else? – the band’s winning performance of “Waterloo” at Eurovision. A 20-page booklet of liner notes will feature a new essay with highlights from new interviews from Andersson and Ulvaeus.
The new Waterloo is out April 7; one day before, a special 7″ picture disc featuring Swedish and English versions of “Waterloo” will be released, too. And it’s certainly safe to assume more commemorative product will be available throughout the year. For now, full track list and pre-order links for the new deluxe set are after the jump.

Ring Ring! ABBA’s Debut Album Gets the CD/DVD Treatment This Fall
It’s been four decades since Agnetha Fälksog, Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Anni-Frid Lyngstad came together to change the face of pop music. This fall, the first album by the group the world now knows as ABBA is getting an expanded CD/DVD treatment – and those who are interested as to how the quartet came together will have a lot of bonus tracks to discover and enjoy.
When the single “People Need Love” was released in 1972, it was intended as a one-off collaboration between three successful Swedish pop entities: female singers Fälksog and Lyngstad and songwriting/producing duo Ulvaeus and Andersson. The single was credited to the rather unmarketable “Björn & Benny, Agnetha & Anni-Frid,” with no intentions of further capitalizing on the partnership. But the success of the song – a Top 20 hit in their native country – led to an album’s worth of sessions, released throughout parts of Europe as Ring Ring. The title track, a Swedish chart-topper, was a sensation in several languages, including German, Spanish and English (with lyrics penned by Neil Sedaka and Phil Cody). When the group reconvened for their second album Waterloo – the title track of which was a worldwide smash and the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest for 1974 – they were, once and for all, a group named ABBA.
The deluxe CD/DVD edition of Ring Ring – the final ABBA album to get this expanded treatment – features no less than 13 bonus tracks, including foreign language versions, non-LP B-sides and even a rare promo-only spoken-word recording. But the real treats are six pre-ABBA recordings featuring the future line-up of the band. Björn & Benny’s “Hej gamle man!” from their album Lycka features backing vocals from Agnetha and Frida. Billy G-son’s non-LP single “There’s a Little Man” b/w “I Saw It in the Mirror” were written and produced by the Andersson-Ulvaeus duo that fueled a decade of ABBA hits, and the quartet also added their magic to singles by Anni-Frid and pop singer Lill-Babs – all of which feature here. The DVD rounds out the action with two vintage TV performances and a Swedish news feature from last year in which Andersson uncovers the secrets behind ABBA’s production techniques direct from the original multitrack masters of “Ring Ring.”
The deluxe Ring Ring will hit stores October 14. Keep an eye out for pre-order links when they’re available, and check out the full track list after the jump!

Mamma Mia! ABBA’s Self-Titled Album Gets Deluxe Treatment in Europe
The never-ending supply of ABBA reissues, expansions and other catalogue ephemera – which was just added to by the release of a new compilation in Europe, rendering our Back Tracks post on the matter even further obsolete – is going to get even bigger with an impending expanded release of the group’s self-titled LP this winter.
ABBA, the Swedish quartet’s third album, was perhaps the first of the group’s to enjoy lasting international exposure. While singles “I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do,” “SOS” and “Mamma Mia” were No. 2 hits in Norway, they were also Top 40 hits in the U.K. (with “Mamma Mia” topping the charts) and Australia (where all three were No. 1 hits). Even the U.S., who turned “Waterloo” into a Top 10 hit in 1974, embraced the danceable tunes, bringing “I Do” and “SOS” both to No. 15 and “Mamma Mia” just outside the Top 30. (That song would of course become one of the band’s most recognizable tracks as the title track of the wildly successful musical of the same name.)
As with previous ABBA deluxe editions, there is very little new to offer on the audio side of things; the same three bonus tracks on previous expansions – the non-LP B-sides “Crazy World” and a medley of standards and a Spanish version of “Mamma Mia” – are included on the CD. Where the set does shine for collectors is the DVD, featuring vintage commercials and live performances, most notably ABBA in Australia, a Swedish edit of an Australian television special called The Best of ABBA. That original special drew 58% of all television audiences down under – more watchers in that country than the comparatively small feat of man walking on the damn moon.
Look for the reissue in November, and hit the jump for the full track breakdown (a link is still forthcoming).
