Legacy Provides Relief for Japan

with one comment

Now here’s a surprise. iTunes, in concert with the major record labels, put together a 38-song compilation called Songs for Japan, the proceeds of which would go to relief funds for the ongoing crises in Japan following a massive earthquake and tsunami that left the country in a state of peril.

And now, Amazon has a listing for the compilation on CD from Legacy. (This two-disc set actually omits some of the tracks heard on the iTunes version, namely tracks by Madonna and David Guetta.) While it’s not a boon for collectors – collecting notable tracks by John Lennon, U2, Sting, Bob Dylan, Lady Gaga, Bruce Springsteen and almost every other famous rock artist one can think of – it’s certainly worth the $10 for a good cause, and we would be remiss if we didn’t pass on to our loyal readers that one can help by simply buying some music – something you and I likely do a lot!

Order Songs for Japan here and hit the jump for the track list.

REMINDER: The Second Disc Ticket Giveaway Ends Friday

leave a comment »

Just a quick heads-up that The Second Disc’s giveaway for a decidedly non-catalogue (but still pretty notable) live show ends this Friday, July 30.

Thanks to Sony’s RED Distribution, we’re giving away a pair of tickets to see Chris Shiflett and The Dead Peasants. Shiflett, currently the lead guitarist for The Foo Fighters and also known for his work with Me First and The Gimme Gimmes and others, released a roots-oriented LP with new band The Dead Peasants (hear here).

The pair of tickets is for a show at TT the Bear’s Place in Cambridge, Massacusetts, and all you have to do to win e-mail to us at theseconddisc (at) gmail (dot) com. Entries close on July 30 and the winner will be selected at random.

Continued luck to our entrants!

The First-Ever Second Disc Ticket Giveaway Extravaganza!

leave a comment »

It is with extreme pleasure that The Second Disc presents its first-ever giveaway, courtesy of Sony’s RED Distribution. It’s a slight deviation from the usual catalogue-oriented affairs, but your humble correspondent couldn’t resist the opportunity to bring you, the reader, some neat (and free!) stuff.

The artist in question is Chris Shiflett, currently the lead guitarist for The Foo Fighters and also known for his work with Me First and The Gimme Gimmes, Jackson United, Viva Death and, formerly, No Use for a Name. The very busy Shiflett just released a new LP, a self-titled effort with new side project The Dead Peasants. It’s a bit more roots-oriented than his other work, bringing to listeners a pedal-steel-and-twang sound to the mix (have a listen here).

If you like what you hear – and you happen to be around the Boston area around August 11 – then today’s your lucky day. Shiflett and company will be playing TT the Bear’s Place in Cambridge, and we’re giving away a pair of tickets to a lucky winner. All you have to do is win is send an e-mail to us at theseconddisc (at) gmail (dot) com. We’ll be accepting entries through July 30 – at which point we’ll select a winner at random – so you’ll have plenty of time to enter and plenty of time to get ready, should you win.

Tell all your friends, and best of luck to the entrants!
