It’s Day 7 of Second Discmas, and we’re thrilled to bring you a remarkable new box set from a legend of jazz!

Wynton Marsalis‘ Swinging Into the 21st is a comprehensive 10-album, 11-CD box set containing career highlights hand-picked by the trumpeter, composer, bandleader and arranger to illuminate each facet of his history!  Marsalis selected the material on Swinging to celebrate his 50th birthday this October 18.  His diverse selections from his large catalogue include two volumes of his Standard Time, 1999′s original film music collection Reel Time, 2000′s The Marciac Suite and Selections from the Village Vanguard Box, and 2002′s All Rise, plus A Fiddler’s Tale, At the Octoroon Balls, Big Train, Sweet Release & Ghost Story!  Each title is packaged in a mini-LP replica sleeve, and a 32-page booklet features full credits and a statement by Marsalis himself.

You can be the one lucky winner of this amazing career retrospective, courtesy of Legacy Recordings, by e-mailing us (theseconddisc (at) gmail (dot) com)!  Just be sure to include your name, city and state in your email.

But that’s not your only way to win!  You can also “like” this post as it appears on Facebook or retweet the post on Twitter!  Drawings for Swinging Into the 21st must be received by Thursday, December 22, at 3:00 p.m. EST.  But if you enter today’s drawing and aren’t a winner, don’t worry!  You’ll automatically be entered in all the rest of the Second Discmas contests!

The Sixth Day of Second Discmas

leave a comment »

Well, Week 2 of Second Discmas is in high gear, and here at Second Disc HQ, we can’t get enough of the great music of the silver screen and the Great White Way!  Today, we’re sharing the immortal music of Hollywood and Broadway with you!

Thanks to our fantastic friends at Kritzerland, we have two amazing prize packs for you today!

Our “Screen” pack is a triple-threat of soundtrack classics, including two from the legendary Elmer Bernstein!  From Bernstein’s pen comes the Original Soundtrack Recording of 1957’s Drango, as well as Kritzerland’s landmark 100th release, the expanded Original Soundtrack of 1961’s Summer and Smoke!  The third treat in this set is Francis Lai’s mesmerizing score to Another Man, Another Chance (1977)!

For our musical theatre buffs, our “Stage” pack is a duo you won’t want to miss!  I wrote of Kritzerland’s 2010 remix – reinvention, really – of the Original Broadway Cast Recording of Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s Promises, Promises: “A real revelation!  I’m usually hesitant to use [that word] as it’s a mite hyperbolic. But this completely remixed version of the album (from the edited eight-track session masters), produced by Kimmel, mixed by John Adams and mastered by Nelson, is worthy of any and all plaudits sent its way. The remix allows the score to be heard anew…Listening to it, I actually felt as if I was in the Shubert Theatre, circa 1968.”  And now the single-disc score, completely remixed and remastered, can be yours!  Promises is joined by the soundtrack to a movie about the making of a musical: the deliciously bawdy The First Nudie Musical!  Not only is the delightfully wacky soundtrack completely remastered and expanded, but your CD has been autographed by the 1975 film’s star, producer, director, composer and lyricist, Bruce Kimmel!

You can win these prizes by e-mailing us (theseconddisc (at) gmail (dot) com)!  Just be sure to include your name, city and state in your email, and put “Second Discmas” in the subject line, along with your pick of “Stage” or “Screen.”

But that’s not your only way to win!  You can also “like” this post as it appears on Facebook or retweet the post on Twitter!  Drawings for Kritzerland’s Broadway and Hollywood classics must be received by Wednesday, December 21, at 3:00 p.m. EST.  But if you enter today’s drawing and aren’t a winner, don’t worry!  You’ll automatically be entered in all the rest of the Second Discmas contests!

Don’t forget to check back each day this week for more prizes, and be sure to tune in to Kritzerland’s irreverent new web series, Outside the Box, for a fresh and funny look at a very offbeat theatre company!

The Fourth Day of Second Discmas

with one comment

We’re at the end of our first week of prizes for Second Discmas, and today’s might be our best yet!

We have a special bundle of prizes from our friends at Legacy Recordings: two packs of two very special box sets the label has done in the past few months. Today’s titles are Miles Davis’ The Bootleg Series Vol. 1: Live in Europe 1967, a 3-CD/1-DVD box set of unreleased performances by the legendary trumpeter’s quintet, and Move Over!, a special box set of four 7″ singles, made for Record Store Day and consisting of rare and unreleased studio outtakes and live recordings by Big Brother and The Holding Company, Janis Joplin and The Kozmic Blues Band and Janis Joplin and The Full Tilt Boogie Band. (If anyone’s had a copy of this set in your hands, you might know that the package teases a Janis box set, The Pearl Sessions, due out next year.)

So two lucky winners will get one copy of each set. Now, since this is a pretty awesome prize pack, we’re extending this giveaway through the whole weekend. So anyone who has or will enter our rolling contest before 3:00 p.m. on Monday, December 19 is eligible to win. And of course, you can win by e-mailing us (theseconddisc (at) gmail (dot) com), liking this post as it appears on Facebook or retweeting the post on Twitter. And check back all next week to see what we’re giving away!

The Third Day of Second Discmas

leave a comment »

It’s the third day of Second Discmas, and what could be better than two copies of some Ben Folds rarities or three Spector compilations? How about five, count ’em, five Piano Men?

Well, it’s only one Piano Man; specifically, it’s Piano Man by Billy Joel. But we’re giving away five copies of Joel’s legendary debut for Columbia Records, featuring the hits “Piano Man” and “Captain Jack.” This remastered Legacy Edition also features, for the first time anywhere, Joel’s 1972 performance at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia, recorded by WMMR-FM and remixed for this set. It was here that one of the first recorded versions of “Captain Jack” was heard, becoming an underground radio hit across the Eastern seaboard and drumming up hype for this fresh, talented songwriter, leading to his eventual deal with Columbia and decades of commercial acclaim.

As before, entering is easy: all you do is either send us an e-mail at theseconddisc (at) gmail (dot) com, like this article as it’s posted to our Facebook page or retweet it as it’s posted to our Twitter feed. And don’t forget, if you’ve already entered our previous days of giveaways, you’re still eligible to win this one! Entries for this giveaway close Friday at 3 p.m., at which point we’ll be giving away an even bigger set, so make sure you’re here to see it!

leave a comment »

It’s The Second Day of Second Discmas, our special form of holiday greetings to our loyal readers, and we’ve got another round of awesome giveaways for you today.

Today, we’ve got another gift for you from our friends at Legacy Recordings. Sony’s reissue arm has been diligent lately in releasing works from the esteemed Philles Records catalogue, from a series of greatest-hits albums to a fantastic, bonus-filled box of vintage albums from the label’s discography. On The Second Day of Second Discmas, we give to thee a trio of teenage symphonies: three copies of The Essential Phil Spector, a two-disc compilation of Spector-produced hits from The Ronettes, The Crystals, Bob B. Soxx & The Blue Jeans, The Righteous Brothers, Ike & Tina Turner and more, are yours to win!

Now, as our prizes are only getting bigger and better from here, we want as many people as possible to get the chance to win. So we’re giving you a few extra chances to earn some prizes:  not only can you enter by sending an e-mail to theseconddisc (at) gmail (dot) com, but you can be eligible to win with each new day by visiting our Facebook page and “liking” this post as it’s cross-posted there, or following us on Twitter and retweeting this post as it’s delivered to our followers. The First Day of Second Discmas

with 3 comments

With Christmas less than two weeks away, we’ve of course been thinking about the best reissues and catalogue titles of 2011. But this year, we’re celebrating a little bit differently: for the most giving time of the year, we reached out to some of our favorite reissue labels and are playing Santa Claus to our awesome and faithful readers. We’re calling it – what else? – Second Discmas, and it’s going on through the rest of the month!

Our first giveaway is a real treat: If you love piano-based power pop, you probably consider Ben Folds in the upper echelon of the subgenre. From his early days writing gorgeous hooks with an edge as the anchor of pop trio Ben Folds Five, to a satisfying solo career that’s found him branching out into soundtrack writing, reality show judging and collaborations with everyone from William Shatner to Nick Hornby, there’s a lot of ground to cover, no.matter how big a fan you are.

This year, Folds and Epic/Legacy took fans down memory lane with The Best Imitation of Myself: A Retrospective. The three-disc set combined Folds’ greatest works with BF5 and on his own, alongside a healthy helping of unreleased live and studio cuts and the first new Ben Folds Five recordings in over a decade.

We have two copies of this to give away for you, and winning is crazy easy! All you do is send an email to theseconddisc (at) gmail (dot) com with the subject head “Second Discmas.” You have until 3:00 pm EST to enter, but here’s the great part: your entry qualifies you for ALL of our giveaways (until you win, of course!). And this is just the first of many prizes to come, so enter now and stay tuned for all our drawings!
