The Second Disc is about two things: catalogue music and you. To that end, here’s a little page that you, the reader, can use to offer your input on anything. See something we should be reporting on? MusicTap reports today that the Peter Gabriel catalog will be reissued on September 28 2010, and amazon lists four titles on that date: So, Us, Up, and Shaking the Tree.
WHAT ARE THESE? I’m guessing just the 2002 remasters, now on Real World Productions Ltd. instead of Geffen. But I’d love to be surprised and discover that they have bonus tracks and other cool stuff…

Not a suggestion so much as a question: the Warner Bros. R.E.M. CD/DVD reissues from 2003… depending on who you ask, the CD portion of these sets were NOT remastered, althogh there were 5.1 mixes on the DVD. Is this true? I want a remastered “Green” on CD but now I’m wondering if such a thing even exists.

My suggestion is to do an expose on how the incredibly expensive Station to Station box set (David Bowie) brickwalled the Nassau concert, despite having the live multitracks that gave them the freedom to mix it as musically (or as brickwalled) as they wanted to. Also the main album itself, Station to Station, is brickwalled on the new mixes, even on the DVD audio. Hi there!
You should check out this 7″ vinyl series that the label Q Division is releasing! It’s called the Q-Dee Rock and Soul series. It’s a series of singles that are based on classic soul. It’s not all classic soul, but it’s all “old-school” in the sense that it features a well-rehearsed live band in a classic studio that recorded quickly, using vintage mics.

I would like to see the following albums re-issued: 1995’s “Mr. Moonlight” by Foreigner, which featured the singles “Until the End of Time” and “Under the Gun”, Ace of Base’s 1999 album, “Cruel Summer” which featured the hit title track, and Expose’s 2nd and 3rd albums, 1989’s “What You Don’t Know” and 1992’s “Expose'”. The former had the hit title track plus “When I Looked At Him” and “Tell Me Why”, while the latter had “I’ll Never Get Over You Getting Over Me”. These are all great, and underrated listens.

Sadly – “Mr Moonlight” being re-issued is very doubtful. The original album had marketing trouble in the first place – 1) 4 different labels handled the release (the first NON-Atlantic release for the band), there were 4 different covers (due to the departure/firing of the drummer just before the album’s release) and a hundred other reasons. I can tell you there was a terrific promo-interview disc that included a great QnA with Mick and Lou, and the alternate versions (a remix of “Under The Gun, a electric piano/acoustic guitar version of “Until The End Of Time” they called “acoustic). The original album and that promo disc make up the bulk of the whole period of releases from the band. This was the first time I got to see the band, one of my favorites of all-time, and I searched for years just to find a promo flat from the album sleeve! I feel your pain tho – I’m still holding out for a reissue of AGENT PROVACATOUR with it’s remixes and b-sides. Glad I’m not holding my breath!

FYI I just received that woundedbird cd today, it exists, it is real. 2 cd set, the second cd being what was previously a vinyl-only album of “outtakes and prototypes”. I keep a ear partially turned towards RH news and I never heard of this being released on cd. Ineffective advertising on the part of someone. I have not A/B’d it yet to compare to my lossless vinyl rip (or rather, to the lossless vinyl rip that every fan has had for a few years now). But I am optimistic.

I know that RTI, MOBILE FIDELITY AND CLASSIC RECORDS all
use the original analog master tapes for vinyl reissues. These
three companies spell out very clearly the history behind each re
release. My question is, labels like Friday Music are releasing
tons of classic rock reissues but I’m not sure these are from
legitimate analog master tapes. I’ve heard companies like this will
use digital masters off of cd’s, and who even knows if its 1st
generation or not. I find this egregious to say the least. I’d love
a list of legit companies and the one’s to stay away from. thanks

It seems several key 80’s artists from A&M are still getting overlooked for remastered catalogs. I’d love to see remasters for Styx, Bryan Adams, and Janet Jackson. These are not small-time sellers. All three artists have several multi-platinum albums. What gives with A&M?

great site, high time we had someone to bring a bit of clarity to the sometimes great but often risible reissue campagins.
I’d call for some great repacks of the debut album by Hipsway, Big Country’s The Crossing and Steeltown, Bryan Adams Reckless.
Prince really needs those ADD originals sorted, especially Lovesexy and Purple Rain. That said, some kind soul did a grand job on his 80’s input a couple of years back.
Anyway, i could keep going but I won’t.

A label this site should add to their labels of note is RockCandyrecords.com. A very cool reissue label from the UK that reissues classic hard rock albums as well as some lost classics. They recently reissued the first Montrose album (featuring Sammy Hagar on vocals) which featured an amazing remastering job from engineer Jon Astley (The Who, Led Zeppelin, Judas Priest) and also featured rare photos, and very informative liner notes.
Rock Candy has also reissued albums from Badlands, Raging Slab, 1994, Doc Holliday, The Godz, Barry Gouddreau (Boston), Steve Walsh (Kansas), Detective, and many other bands. They are a little pricey as UK imports but I think they are totally worth it!

I’d like to see Madhouse 8 + 16 remastered and reissued (together on 1 CD). Also, the Vangelis catalogue has not been remastered and he deserves a 3 or 4 disc box set that covers both his classic 70s tunes and later soundtrack works.

Since we are entering a new era of “Rolling Stones archival releases” – where is the long overdue “Video Rewind” DVD? Or an expanded version of 25 x 5, that would include complete performances of the songs that are truncated during the documentary? And the UM Remasters would have probably sold a lot better if they had included a bonus DVD that could have included the promo videos (many never officially released) for all the albums from Goat’s Head Soup onwards.

It’s a minor thing, but I’d like it better if either the full text was shown, or if the page expanded upon clicking the link to reveal everything without taking you away from the main page. I see you’ve reported on some of the ZTT reissues, and while looking for them I came across this bit of unreported news: Paul Rutherford (former FGTH member) is having his 1989 album re-released with a… second disc of remixes.

On 31st January of this year, EMI re-released Barclay James Harvest’s “Once Again” album for its 40th anniversary, with extra tracks and a bonus DVD containing audiophile versions and surround sound mixes, apparently taken from the original quad release back in the days.

This nugget is long overdue for remastering and I am sure a bit of bonus material. If I am not mistaken The Call opened for Peter Gabriel on the “Security” tour.

Would love to see a reissue of Shaun Cassidy’s 1980 new wave album “Wasp”. This forgotten gem was produced by Todd Rundgren and contains some really cool covers that sound really representative of the era. There’s a Bowie cover, a Who cover and a Mott the Hoople cover. I’ve played this album for many people who really dug it as a solid early 80’s new wave album without knowing it was created by a former teen idol. A really good album-it deserves a faithfully remastered reissue of this gem.

How about a reader’s “Top 5 Super Secret Vinyl Reissue Dream List” of some albums that should be (finally!) reissued on CD? It’s always a learning experience when we share together. I’ll start off with a tickler….how about a CD issue of Adam Mitchell’s fine 1979 Warner Bros. platter, “Redhead in Trouble.” ?! Great songwriting and superb production and performance. It could include some of Adam’s post-Paupers demos and songs heading into his Southern California era stuff.

Here’s something I just stumbled across that may be of interest. Amazon has a May 17 release date for an import 6 CD Hollies box set “Clarke Hicks and Nash Years: The Complete Hollies”. This supposedly collects everything the Hollies recorded for EMI while Graham Nash was part of the group. No track listing on Amazon as of yet but one of the Hollies blogs has a track listing which reflects 160+ songs including foreign language versions and a previously unreleased concert. Love your site…keep up the good work!

I wanted to pass on that Rock Candy records is going to reissue two Kansas albums, 1982’s Vinyl Confessions and 1983’s Drastic Measures on May 25th. I posted before that they are a terrific reissue label reissuing many classic and lost classic hard rock albums on CD. They have also recently reissued the first two Starcastle albums as well as Greg Lake’s two solo albums which also featured the late Gary Moore.

Hip-O-Select released 12 volumes of “The Complete Motown SIngles” covering the years 1959-1971. The last two were labelled 11A and 11B. These sets were lavishly done with detailed liner notes. The series was always supposed to go to 1972. There was talk that 1972 was going to be divided into two sets as with 1971. Then, all went quiet. There have been some postings about licensing issues with the tracks from 1972, but no official word from Hip-O-Select for some time.
It would be great if Second Disc could get an update on the status of the series from Hip-O-Select. Thanks.

This will feature every single the band released in the UK from 1977-2008. Each single will come in the original artwork.
This will only be available to buy through the band’s official website, and fans can pre-order copies from June.

Upon the sad, sad news of the passing of Andrew Gold, a hefty box set of his considerable talents is now a “must do” for a forward-thinking label. Not only did Andrew create some great albums in the late 70s/early 80s on Asylum, but his self-run QuarkBrain stuff was/is amazing. From his “1951” CD to his collection of hilarious and right-on-the-money phone answering machine tapes (compiled to CD). Great! And let us not forget his work with Graham Gouldman in WAX (and later day 10CC) and his kids’ releases for Halloween and Christmas. In fact, Andrew even had a special contemporary Christmas collection in the can (hard drive?) called “HO, HO, HO” that I’m longing to finally hear. All of this and we’re not even touching his groundbreaking arrangement work and musicianship with Ms. Ronstadt which, along with her incredible voice, solidified her place in the annals of rock.
Someone…please consider the late, great Andrew Gold for your next big box project…..he produced MORE than enough masterpieces to fill one, two or three times over!

The second disc should give some in depth attention to the new Suede remasters. They are a wet dream of deluxe/bonus goodies.
PS – the Pet Shop Boys did one of the first ( and still best ) reissues of a back catalog way back in 2001. I know this is old news but these are really the bench mark against which great deluxe remaster two disc sets should be measured. Well worth a look.

Ther are worth the money. They have adopted an interesting take in laying these out. You get the original album remastered and it’s demos on disc 1. The demos are a bit raw and have not been treated to much tweaking. They give you a good idea of how far songs go from inception to the final cut. Disc 2 is really what makes theses worth having. Back in the day I was just your average fan, not for me buying every single or EP for the B-sides. So I was shocked by the number of B-sides this band put out!. Head Music alone has 19!!! B-sides! Half of which could easily have been album cuts, really high quality stuff. The B-Sides do get the remaster touch and sound great. Disc 3 is a dvd and has live shows, the videos to all the singles and an interview with the band. I’ve only watched the DVD for the debut album so can only comment on it . Here again, you get to see the difference between the very raw live performances and the much more polished Videos. For me the best part of the DVD was the band interview. It’s a simple set up just the band members being asked questions about why they made this or that choice and what went into making the songs. Very informative without the pointless flattery you sometimes get with these things. I was actually sad to see the interview end, not something I can usually say. The packaging is also very good. And to top everything off I picked these up for 25 $ on amazon. Talk about value for money.

Greetings! Thanks for the great site (just found out about it via Spin in the U.K). A couple of suggestions for Deluxe Editions: the great album by Joan Armatrading simply called “JOAN ARMATRADING”.This used to sound sonically brilliant on vinyl, but the CD versions have been flat and dull sounding, at best. And A&M (Universal) should think about a deluxe version of John Hiatt’s classic “BRING THE FAMILY” with Ry Cooder, Nick Lowe and Jim Keltner. There must be outtakes,jams,etc. in someones’ vault. Re. Craig’s query about the Faces, they have been re-issued as mini-lp sleeves(without bonus tracks) in Japan.WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON AT WARNER BROS? They have sat on their hands (and their magnificent catalogue) and It’s driving me NUTS! What about a Deluxe Ed. of, in my opinion, one of the greatest progressive blues rock albums of all time, Fleetwood Mac’s “THEN PLAY ON”,and the rest of the non Buckingham-Nicks titles. The Japanese Mini-lp re-issues, also seemed to have stalled. I would love minis of “CROSBY, STILLS & NASH”,”DEJA VU” etc. & Bonnie Raitt titles as well. Rhino would have been the perfect company to do these Dlxe.Eds or re-issue, but they seem to have been neutered since being taken over by Warners.

I just saw that a deluxe version of The Long Ryders’ Native Sons CD was released back in May (it came up in my recommendations from Amazon). In addition to the original album and the 10-5-60 EP it now also includes tracks from the Radio Tokyo sessions and 5 by 5 sessions.

I just ordered the new UFO The Chrysalis Years 1973-1979 5-CD Boxset from Amazon.co.uk and it is the motherload of this underrated band featuring Michael Schenker. Hello, the Greater Hits feature is something that was much needed!
I don’t recount how many times I’ve checked, double-checked and cross-checked which was the “best best of” an artist…
Most of the time, though, the “historical” ones are what a casual fan needs the most (This Time for Culture Club, Twelve Deadly Cyns by Cyndi Lauper, Tears Roll Down for Tears for Fears…)
… but it can be a re-issue (The Very Best of Supertramp)
… or a later package (Greatest Hits by Billy Idol, The Platinum Collection for David Bowie)
…sometimes it can even be a generic product (The Essential Sly and the Family Stone)
…or like finding a mouse tooth in a sandbag (King of Pop UK edition for Michael Jackson)
…it can even don’t exist (every Deep Purple compilation lacks a classic tune)
If there is any way to contribute to this section, please let me know, I’d love to help and share my past researchs.

Rock Candy Records is going to reissue the debut album from Vandenberg on September 23. The album featured Adrian Vandenberg who would later join Whitesnake where his biggest contribution was playing the guitar solo to Here I Go Again. But the Vandenberg album was recorded at Jimmy Page’s Sol Studio and featured the Top 40 hit Burning Heart.
Woundedbird had reissued this album back in 2002 along with the other two Vandenberg albums like Heading For a Storm and Alibi which weren’t that great. The sound was like someone remastered the discs from an old cassette and to me that is how a lot of other Woundedbird reissues sound like. But I know based on other Rock Candy reissues I own that they will give this underrated hard rock album on the early 80s the justice it deserves. I cannot wait to get this!

Rock Candy Records is definitely an outstanding reissue company. I bought Billy Squier’s TALE OF THE TAPE and their two Rick Springfield remasters. Both have absolutely superb sound and packaging. The problem is they get so few major artists to remaster. Their vast majority of work is stuck with people whom have to be described to know who they are. Case in point “Adrian Vandenberg who would later join Whitesnake”. There’s a TON of major artists out there who’s catalogs have not yet been remastered. Styx, Sammy Hagar, Bryan Adams, more from Rick Springfield and Billy Squier, etc. If only RCR could get their hands on those.

Rock Candy did a fantastic job reissuing Sammy Hagar’s Street Machine adding 2 bonus cuts: I’ve Done Everything For You” which Rick Springfield would later record and his version of “Sitting On The Dock Of The Bay.” They also reissued the first Montrose album featuring Sammy Hagar and Jon Astley did a remastering job that put the original Warner release on CD (as well as the recent Audio Fidelity version) to shame!
But I agree I would hope they would reissue some other Billy Squier albums as well as his two releases with the band Piper. But I agree some of the bands they reissue are very obscure and I have bought a lot of those discs which are great. Here is my list of must have Rock Candy reissues:
1. Badlands, S/T and Voodoo Highway – Both albums are two of my favorites featuring ex Ozzy guitarist Jake E Lee, current KISS drummer Eric SInger and the late Ray Gillen on vocals. Both came out in 1989 and 1991 and are amazing.
2. Detective, S/T – A great lost classic of 1977 which was released on Led Zeppelin’s Swan Song label and featured Michael Des Barres, Michael Monarch from Steppenwolf, and Tony Kaye from YES. I like this record a great deal and it is essential for Zeppelin fans who might want to see who else was on Swan Song other than Bad Company or Dave Edmunds.
3. The Godz – Produced by Grand Funk drummer Don Brewer, this is the purest form of biker rock you will ever hear. I had only heard about the album, but never was able to find it until Rock Candy reissued it. And it is an album every hard rock fan should own!
4. Raging Slab – I had this on vinyl years ago and I remember the sticker on the shrink wrap that said “Lynyrd Skynyrd meets Metallica.” The description was pretty accurate but it has some great songs as well as amazingly good guitar playing. I remember “Don’t Dog Me” getting airplay on MTV back in 1989.
5. Hughes Thrall – The 1982 release that featured ex Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Trapeze and current Black Country Communion singer/bassist Glenn Hughes and Automatic Man guitarist Pat Thrall.
6. Lita Ford – Her classic 1988 album which sounds amazing. It also has a bonus remix of her classic “Close My Eyes Forever” with Ozzy!
7. Ram Jam – Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Ram – There was more to this one hit wonder band than Black Betty. This 1977 album runs the gamut of sounds from KISS to Aerosmith and UFO.
8. Doc Holliday S/T and Rides Again – An unsung Southern Rock band from the late 70’s. They also opened up for Black Sabbath in the early 80’s during the Mob Rules era.
But you have to check their site every now and then to see what they have in store. But for a label that specializes in reissuing some lost and obscure bands, they got it right and do it better than other labels out there.

Have you ever considered having an “unboxing” section like you see on gadget websites where photos could be posted of certain boxsets/reissues being unwrapped and offering a closer look at packaging. I live in a rural spot so often the first time I get to examine a purchase is when the amazon delivery comes. I’d be interested in seeing unboxing pictures of the upcoming Pink Floyd immersion boxes.

I think a timely Reissue Theory would be R.E.M.’s Dead Letter Office. Considering that none of the previous 25th Anniversary editions had any relevant B-sides, I challenge the Second Disc crew to compile an expanded DLO that includes all the extra tracks from the 1981-1987 era that could fit. (And yes, I’d include “Romance” and the other Document-era extras.) Have at it!

After being inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame, I think 2011 is the year for Alice Cooper. I picked up the Best Buy Edition of Welcome 2 My Nightmare with bonus cuts as well as the iTunes edition with even more bonus cuts a week and a half ago and I have not been able to stop listening to it! It is such a welcome treat to hear a new Bob Ezrin production that is familiar yet very modern. The album is getting great reviews and it debuted at #22 on Billboard which in this day and age is very impressive!
Because of his new album’s success, I now hope there might be an interest in remastering the Cooper catalog. Unfortunately, the Life and Crimes boxset as well as the expanded Billion Dollar Babies and Welcome To My Nightmare which were all terrific are now out of print. Since the new album has been released on Universal, would the Second Disc happen to know if Hip-O (or maybe even Shout Factory since they released Good To See You Again Alice Cooper on DVD) might be getting the entire catalog to reissue in the near future? It would be cool to see albums like Love It To Death, Killer and School’s Out get remastered since the WB discs sound flat.

I read on hennemusic.com that Sony Japan will release a 30th anniversary 2 CD edition of Aerosmith’s 1976 classic Rocks with a bonus disc of rarities and live tracks. I couldn’t find any new details about it but maybe the Seconddisc could do some investigating? Here is the link for the article:

Also Rock Candy Records just reissued the first two albums by the cult 70s hard rock band Lone Star (S/T and Firing On All Six) who were produced by Roy Thomas Baker of Queen and featured singer John Sloman who would later replace David Byron in Uriah Heep and guitarist Paul Chapman who is the cousin of Dave Edmunds and was Michael Schenker’s replacement in UFO. Both discs include bonus BBC tracks and they look great! I hooe to have my copies of both discs next week.

I just opened an email from Amazon.UK and there appears to be a new RUSH title called RUSH ABC 1974 which is an official release of a Cleveland radio broadcast concert. Could the Seconddisc find out more information? The release date for it is this coming Monday and with all the new Rush releases and Reissues coming out, this looks like it might be the most interesting. I just hope the sound quality is amazing.

Fans of the band Boston should get ready for the Rock Candy Records reissue of Orion The Hunter on November 14th. The album was originally released in 1984 and featured Boston alumni Barry Goudreau, the late Brad Delp and Fran Cosmo as well as Michael Derosier from Heart. It is a good album that featured the minor hit “So You Ran” and it has been in and out of print over the years. It is nice to see that Rock Candy will reissue it and will give it the proper treatment it deserves.

I would like to see all the domestic record labels do remastered Mini LP cardboard sleeve CD reissues of their catalogs. Do them exactly like they do in Japan, only not over priced like those are. Replicate the original LP packaging including all the swag such as stickers, booklets, mini posters etc. These could be limited editions, only available for a certain amount of time, but not limited quantity. They could feature CD only bonus tracks, exclusive to the compact disc and not available digitally. These would be a boost to our beloved record stores. I realize some labels have done similar packaging on some releases, but they are not of the quality of the Japan reissues. The majors do these overseas, why not here?

I’ll forgive you (because you’re not in France), but for its 40th anniversary, Serge Gainsbourg’s classic album “Melody Nelson” has just been re-released here in a variety of different flavours – as shown on the official site: http://boutique-melodynelson.com
The basic reissue (2CD + DVD) has the album, outtakes and a 40-minute documentary, plus the original album in 5.1 surround sound.
There’s also a limited edition vinyl picture disc of the original album.
But the most interesting package would be the ‘super deluxe box set’, numbered and limited to 10,000 units with the 2 CDs and DVD, double vinyl (not the picture disc; contains the the same titles as the two CDs) and a 52-page book in English and French, plus (perhaps a bonus if you order direct) 5 photos.
It looks like the box set may be released elsewhere, as a subtitled extract from the documentary can be found on Youtube here: http://youtu.be/kq_OazJx-fs
Even more interestingly, the non-subtitled version of the clip (here: http://youtu.be/97ip0sdVN14) is available in 720p and 1080p, which suggests the possibility of a Blu-ray version in the future.

association remastered….Don’t buy this! There is no excuse for this to be mono. If they used the masters, then make it stereo. Maybe the singles have to be mono, but the instrumentals and original lp? They probably will gouge you with a remastered “remastered” cd, in the near future,which will be stereo.

Rest assured, these Association discs sound fantastic in mono; the decision to reissue in mono was an artistic choice. In addition, the mono album (how many listeners were introduced to the LP) hadn’t been reissued on CD until now, whereas the stereo album has been available. Now Sounds’ producer Steve Stanley spoke to The Second Disc in late 2010 about the mono vs. stereo debate, and you can read his thoughts here:

Having received just a couple of days ago the “Supremes – 50th Anniversay 3 CD Singles Box Set” from Motown / Universal, I wasn’t very happy with the sound. Beiing an audio studio mastering engineer myself, I tried to find out why. In the end, it’s showed extreme compression applied to the old masters which made it sound artifical and unnatural. Which leads to my question:
Is it possible to add to your (and other) reviews the DR (dynamic range) values for the CD reviewed? These can be measured very easily in Mac / WIndows PCs (via stand-alone tools), and will give you a great advantage against other music review web sites. If you (or anyone else) needs more info, see “Dynamic Range” and “The Loudness War” via wikipedia.org (and other websites).
Any DR values added to your reviews will be a great info towards good and bad mastering, and great sound (or not, as with Universals Supremes set as mentioned). And mastering engineers like Bob Ludwig knows the problem … Thanks for considering this for 2012 …

Fantastic blog – I check it several times a week.
My suggestion: I’ve been wondering for years what the real story is with Van Morrison’s aborted reissue series. I know the situation now: the series was halted halfway through, and most of his classic titles are therefore out of print (Hard Nose The Highway is going for $40 used now…I picked the wrong time to try to complete my Van collection!).
What I don’t know is why all this happened. This all went down right around the time the Van-related fansites were scrubbed from the Web.
I don’t suppose you’d have the scoop on where things stand, and if his stuff is ever going to come back into print?

Anybody heard anymore news about the mythic Nilsson Box Set rumored to be out in February with 16 CDs choked full of released and unreleased beautifulness? Last I heard, Andrew Sandoval has steering this ship and that Nilsson’s “Flash Harry” LP tracks would NOT be included in the set. That’s a shame for Nilsson fanatics like myself that have never won the lottery and been able to afford one of the rarer than hen’s teeth copies of that LP. Blog site “For the Love of Harry” has been pretty mum about the whole thing, just recently leaking the “Flash Harry” news I related. Anybody know more?

Sad news to report that another rock great named Ronnie passed away. Guitarist Ronnie Montrose died yesterday at the age of 64. http://news.yahoo.com/rock-guitarist-ronnie-montrose-dies-204529686.html
He worked with Herbie Hancock, Van Morrisson and of course introduced Sammy Hagar to the world with the classic 1973 Montrose album. That album is the definition of “all killer and no filler.” If you haven’t heard it, go to Amazon and order it (preferably the Rock Candy records remaster) today!

I would like to suggest John Denver’s Greatest Hits Volume 2 (RCA 1977)for the reissue theory. This could really stand to be remastered and re-issued with some good liner notes and maybe a bonus track or two. It was only released on CD in 1990 and is mastered at a very low volume. RCA/Legacy re-issued Volume 1 in 2005 but never Volume 2, which actually contains more chart hits. Five of the songs on this album are unique recordings that, as far as I know, are unavailable anywhere else. (Farewell Andromeda, This Old Guitar, Grandma’s Feather Bed, Like a Sad Song and My Sweet Lady, although this version of My Sweet Lady was included on the Essential John Denver). Really enjoy the site, keep up the good work!

JANE OLIVOR, esp. her Columbia years, and especially her 1982 IN CONCERT LP. Everyone claims there’s nothing more to it than what’s there, but I just don’t believe it. First, it clocks in at about 35 minutes in total (a 35 minute concert?). Mike DeLugg was the engineer and associate producer and I doubt if he pushed the “Stop” button everytime the song list told him to. Plus the album starts out with this canned applause (nothing approaching what an Olivor entrance would bring out from a rapturous audience). Plus none of the cornerstones, save three songs (Stay the Night, Better Days, Carousel of Love), are present, and those are huge gaps not to be included.

Love your blog! I’m wondering if you can check into the status of the long-rumored volumes 12A and 12B of Hip-O-Select’s Complete Motown Singles. The previous 11+ volumes have been wonderfully prepared, but there’s been no work on the last two sets. I understood there were some legal issues, but there hasn’t been a definitive comment on whether the two sets will be issued or not. Thanks.

I can come with endless wish lists of reissues. I would love to see the Sylvers’ Pride/MGM catalog be reissued. I would love to see Jermaine Jackson’s Motown catalog be reissued. As well as Atlantic Starr’s A&M catalog. Sony/Legacy should put together the Jacksons’ Epic albums box set. We have seen the two stellar releases Destiny and Triumph remastered, now I would like to see the rest of them remastered including the first two albums produced by Gamble-Huff. It would be refreshing to hear. I would also like to see the Emotions’ Columbia/ARC catalog remastered. The Isley Brothers T-Neck Albums box set would be nice as well as the O’Jays’ Philadelphia International Albums. I would definitely like to see a deluxe edition of Bobby Brown’s Don’t Be Cruel album. I think New Edition’s MCA catalog should get the reissue treatment.

What is the problem with Arista? There are numerous albums that have NEVER made it to cd and there seems to be no inclination to do so. Examples include
1. Batdorf & Rodney-Life Is You
2. Silver-Silver
3. Funky Kings-Funky Kings
4. Alex Call-Alex Call
5. Jack Tempchin-Jack Tempchin
Several of the aforementioned artists have been asked and their comment is that Arista doesn’t seem to interetested in doing anything. Any input out there?

Purportedly, professional footage of the entire evening concert with matching sound has been found. From what I was told, some employees in the Sony Custom Marketing department along with others from Legacy have already screened the DVD that will accompany the set.

I just discovered this blog. LOVE IT!! I love the Reissue Theory section. I am a huge 80s music fan. I would love to see Laura Branigan’s albums reissued. There are a slew of B-sides, remixes and songs recorded that didn’t make any of the albums. I know she never made it as big as Madonna or Cyndi Lauper, but she had a dynamite voice and can sing anything, whether it was a dance song or a tear-jerker ballad.

Rumor has it (no official EPE announcement yet) that the next Elvis Presley album title to get the expanded, 2-disc FTD treatment will be the second-to-last album to be released during his lifetime–1976’s “From Elvis Presley Boulevard, Memphis, Tennessee”, noteworthy for having been entirely recorded in Graceland’s Jungle Room.

There’s a wonderful new box set out in Canada for Blue Rodeo. It’s called “1987-1993” and includes their first five albums plus a bonus disc called “Odds & Ends.” All albums are in LP replica sleeves (not the Japanese kind, but larger sleeves that fold open as some albums have 2 discs. Their debut, “Outskirts,” includes a second disc with a new remix of the album by the band. The “Casino” album comes with a second disc of rarities. Each album has liner notes, and there’s an additional booklet in the box, plus a little envelope of postcards that are reprints of promotional posters. It’s available on their website and also from Amazon.ca. The albums have also been issued separately in Canada, too.

MusicTAP reports that Mercury Records plan to release a Super Deluxe CD/BD reissue of Rush’s 1976 masterpiece, “2112,” on December 18.
Rush sound engineer Richard Chycki confirmed the news Wednesday via Twitter, writing, “Yep, words out. I’ve been working on the surround remix of #Rush #2112 for months. Queue rear waterfall. #holygrail”
When asked by a fan if he ever thought in his wildest dreams “when you played these albums as a youngin that you’d be doing this?,” Chycki replied, “2112 … the album that got me in to Rush. An amazing full circle really. #Overwhelming.”
And Universal is also releasing deluxe editions of Rainbow’s Long Live Rock N Roll and On Stage on November 5th. Both discs feature vocals from the late great Ronnie James Dio. Amazon.uk has them listed and there looks to be a lot of interesting unreleased bonus tracks.

I would love to see Jermaine Jackson’s Motown catalog be remastered. That would be awesome and I think Hip-O Select would do a great job. So far they have done a great job with Michael Jackson’s “Hello World: The Motown Solo Collection” and the two recent compilations “I Want You Back: The Unreleased Masters” and “Come and Get It: The Rare Pearls.” They should put together a comprehensive J5 box set of all their released material as well as more from the vaults. But as far as Jermaine, they should issue the shelved albums including the Philadelphia sessions and the original Stevie Wonder sessions.

How great it would be to see the entire Lovin’ Spoonful catalog released in a boxset with additional tracks and comments. Almost every 60’s band has 1 on more boxsets in the market. Why not the Lovin’ Spoonful? They were one of the top groups with a string of hits that still sound fresh today as they did then. Please do them right. Rhino please show us that you’re the world leading box label. Maybe they can finally use the “Live at the Night Owl Café” album that was to be released some 15 years ago.

Mike, any idea what happened to the Rhino.com store and Rhinohandmade.com? Last year I bought quite a few items from them during their Twelve Days of Christmas sale, and this year not only haven’t they had the sale, but they don;t even seem to have a store anymore, with the rhino.com website referring people to Amazon or iTunes to buy music. It doesn’t look good for Rhino, unfortunately….

Well, according to Nilsson-ista Curtis Armstrong, by way of the “For the Love of Harry” website, the 17 (?!) CD Harry Nilsson box set has been scraped. So sad! I’m sure there were many among us that were REALLY looking forward to that box. According to Armstrong, the music label big shots have decreed that no one buys CDs anymore, so they feel the box would fall flat. Sounds like a boutique label needs to come to the rescue and save this project. I haven’t heard a peep from Andrew Sandoval, who was reportedly compiling and producing the collection. If anyone has a more definitive story to tell about the box, I’m/we’re all ears!

Hello Second Disc! I wanted to make the suggestion of including a link to Culture Factory USA in your labels of note section. They’ve been putting out some great Mini LP CD replicas, most recently three wonderful Kim Carnes titles. They’ve got some terrific new titles on their calendar too. It’s nice to have another option for these mini LP CDs other than the very pricey Japanese releases.

Someone needs to reissue “The Ballad of Calico” by Kenny Rogers and the First Edition. That album is a lost classic that definitely deserves to be re-discovered. The score and lyrics were written by Michael Martin Murphey (pre-Wildfire) and Larry Cansler, and each member of the First Edition sang leads. I honestly can not boast enough about what a masterpiece “The Ballad of Calico” is… yet it has never been reissued in any format since its 1972 release. A high quality package, with the original booklet and new liner notes, would be incredible. Someone should jump on this one!

The one and only album recorded by Quatermess is set for re-release in June, complete with new mixes.
Founding member J Peter Robinson – later of Brand X – has masterminded a 5.1 surround sound and new stereo version of the landmark self-titled 1970 record that turned heads with its musicianship, concept and vision.
The DVD/CD set also features three bonus tracks, two of which are previously unreleased, and includes an illustrated booklet with commentary by Robinson. It’s released via Esoteric Recordings on June 24.
On the same day Esoteric also launch a collection of unreleased studio sessions by Robinson’s experimental outfit The Sphincter Ensemble. Harrodian Event #1 was recorded in 1972 and features Quatermass bassist John Gustafson, who later worked with Steve Hackett and Roxy Music. Also present are Martyn Ford (Barclay James Harvest), Paul Buckmaster (David Bowie), Trevor Morais and Tony Walmsley.

Joni Mitchell’s studio albums have been re-released in a 10 disc set called ‘Studio Albums 1968-1979’.
I don’t think it features any new tracks but discs are in replica paper slip cases. I believe the sound has been remastered also.

I don’t think this has reached the international press yet, but there have been some interesting (official) releases from the archives of the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Netherlands. Packages of a cd plus dvd with concerts by Wayne Shorter, Dizzy Gillespie and Dexter Gordon. This week a 1985 concert by Miles Davis is released on such a cd/dvd combo.

I just saw on Amazon.com that on September 23, Thin Lizzy’s Renegade will get an expanded reissue and Thunder and Lightning will get a deluxe treatment. The track listings for both look pretty amazing.

Eddie Trunk.com reports that Rush is going to reissue a remixed version of Vapor Trails which will come out on October 1st. It will be available as either a standalone release or as part of a new Atlantic Years boxset which will include Presto, Roll The Bones, Counterparts, Test For Echo, Feedback and Snakes and Arrows.

how about an overview of Ry Cooder’s box? 🙂
It’s neat but extremely basic, similar to Joni Mitchell’s box: discs housed in cardboard sleeves, no booklet, no info of any sort apart from the print on the LP-replica sleeves (if you can read them).
No info about remastering (if any, my guess is no remastering; but it would be nice to have some info).
The sound is great anyway, except the first album which still sounds muddled and directionless as it always has, but that’s Van Dyke Parks’ producing; great musician but not that great at producing if I may say so. He later gradually handed over production duties on R.C.’s projects, thankfully.

Looks this Jazzplus series was started to counter the grey labels releasing these recordings from around ’62/’63 that are now in the “public domain” . I’m curious if they are going to continue this series next year with more titles from ’64/’65’.

Domino Records in the USA are releasing a vinyl remaster of Aztec Camera’s High Land, Hard Rain in February. The vinyl comes with a DL card for all the extra tracks that will be included on a 2CD reissue of the same title. I tried to order it for the UK but there are rights restrictions on it 😦

Christopher Rainbow : two 70’s albums on Polydor. I missed the 2007 Japanese remasters and any appearing for sale are mega-bucks. “Home Of The Brave” (1975) featured Tonto’s Expanding Headband production and 70’s Stevie Wonder musicians/vocalists, followed by “Looking Over My Shoulder” in 1978 are wonderful examples of melodic, clever pop in the tradition of Sunflower/Surf’s Up Beach Boys. A classy two’fer should have happened years ago…..

A new Ry Cooder box is being released from Rhino by the end of September, same mold and sort of a complement to the “album box 1970-1987”, it collects (a few of) his soundtracks (The Long Riders, Paris Texas, Alamo Bay, Blue City, Crossroads, Johnny Handsome, Trespass).
Quite a lot has been left out, but preorder price at Amazon UK is currently £ 15.86 (for 7 CDs…)

Edsel is going to release a CD/Vinyl box of Ian Dury’s studio albums.
It would be interesting to know if they are going to do it the right way (remastering from original analog tapes) or if they are going to mess it up big time like they messed with the 2013 Robert Palmer reissues, which were famously found out be sourced from mp3 or anyway mp3-ish files (cut off in the 16kHz range which is typical of mp3 compression).
