These recordings, which include the first version of Monk’s classic composition “‘Round Midnight” (originally recorded as “‘Round About Midnight”), were released on a series of fifteen 78 RPM singles. Later, the singles were re-compiled on 10-inch and 12-inch LPs.  This collection, housed in a hardbound digipak, will present for the first time Monk’s Blue Note singles in their original 78 RPM sequence of release, adding as bonus tracks the alternate takes that appeared on later LP and CD releases.  All told, the 2-CD set includes nine tracks not available on any current reissues of the great pianist/composer’s albums.

Sound Chaser: Steven Wilson Revisits Yes, Jethro Tull In Stereo and Surround

with 5 comments

RelayerWhen it comes to new surround-sound mixes, one name has become closely associated with the format: Steven Wilson. Keeper of the progressive-rock flame and frontman for Porcupine Tree, Wilson has in recent years created definitive 5.1 remixes for artists like King Crimson, Yes, XTC, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Gentle Giant, and Jethro Tull. It was recently announced that Wilson would be extending his talents to an upcoming reissue from (non-prog!) rock band Tears for Fears, and we can also confirm that he is continuing his work with the catalogues of Yes and Jethro Tull. On November 4, Wilson’s new surround and stereo remixes will be featured on CD/DVD-A and CD/BD editions of Yes’ 1974 album Relayer, and on November 17, he will revisit another 1974 prog classic, Jethro Tull’s WarChild.

The upcoming Relayer arrives on the heels of other recent Yes reissues of The Yes Album and Close to the Edge. Relayer was the seventh studio album from Yes, and the band’s only studio album featuring keyboardist Patrick Moraz; he joined in August ’74 following Rick Wakeman’s departure to pursue a solo career. With just three lengthy tracks, Yes upped the free-form jazz quotient on Relayer without sacrificing the band’s accessibility. Relayer proved to be a Top 5 success on both sides of the Atlantic, earning a Gold certification in the United States. The Panegyric reissues, available in CD/DVD-A and CD/BD iterations, will both feature Wilson’s new stereo and surround mixes as well as a host of bonus material. As in the past, the Blu-ray editions will feature additional music not present on the DVD-A.

Contents are as follows:

The region-free NTSC DVD-Audio disc includes:

  • The original album mixed in high resolution 5.1 surround from original multi-track sources.
  • New album mix and original album mix (flat transfer) in high resolution stereo
  • Alternate album presentation comprising demos and studio run-throughs

The region-free Blu-ray Audio disc includes:

  • 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio Surround (24bit/96khz) mixed from the original multi-channel recordings.
  • New stereo album mix in DTS-HD Master Audio (24bit/96khz).
  • Original album mix in a DTS-HD Master Audio flat transfers from the original master tape source (24bit/192khz)
  • Needledrop of an original UK vinyl A1/B1 pressing transferred in 24bit/96khz audio.
  • Exclusive instrumental versions of all new mixes in DTS-HD Master Audio stereo (24bit/96khz).
  • More audio extras in high-resolution stereo, including demos and studio run-throughs of album tracks making for an alternative version of Relayer.
  • Additional BD-exclusive demo/studio run-throughs, full album instrumental mixes, a full album needledrop of an original UK A1/B1 vinyl pressing, singles edits, live tracks and needledrops of the banded tracks from the original US vinyl promo album.

As on The Yes Album and Close to the Edge, the CD (included in both versions) features Wilson’s new stereo mix. It also adds two single edits. In all packages, Sid Smith provides new liner notes and original artwork elements are also preserved.

After the jump: details on Wilson’s deluxe WarChild plus track listings and pre-order links for both titles!

Perpetual Change: Steven Wilson Takes “The Yes Album” To 5.1 Surround and Beyond with Unheard Music

with one comment

Yes - The Yes AlbumSay Yes!

Prog-rock hero and surround-sound guru Steven Wilson has just confirmed the near-imminent release of the second title in his series of expanded and remixed Yes classics.  On April 14, the Panegyric label will reissue 1971’s landmark The Yes Album in CD/DVD-Audio and CD/Blu-ray packages loaded with bonus material and new stereo and surround mixes.

Yes’ third studio LP, The Yes Album welcomed guitarist Steve Howe to the band following the departure of Peter Banks.  Howe immediately made his presence felt, writing one original song himself (“Clap”) and contributing to the epics “Yours in No Disgrace” and “Starship Trooper.”   Lengthy compositions dominated both sides of the original vinyl, with only two songs under the near-seven-minute mark: “Clap” and Jon Anderson’s “A Venture.”  The Yes Album would also be the last album for keyboardist Tony Kaye, who would be replaced by Rick Wakeman for the band’s next release, Fragile.

Despite the comings and goings in the band, the Anderson/Howe/Kaye/Chris Squire/Bill Bruford line-up sounded in perfect harmony on The Yes Album.  They blended key elements of folk and rock into a dramatic whole, showcasing the individual members’ impeccable musicianship with adventuresome science-fiction concepts and a broad stylistic palette.  Anderson, Howe and Squire’s three-part suite “Starship Trooper”- containing “Life Seeker,” “Disillusion” and “Würm” closed Side One, while Anderson and Squire’s two-part “I’ve Seen All Good People” opened Side Two.  The first part of “Good People,” the chess-inspired “Your Move” (with its apparent allusions to Lewis Carroll and John Lennon) was released as a single, backed with “Clap,” and has been covered numerous times over the years.

The Yes Album turned out to be the band’s commercial breakthrough, cracking the Top 40 in America and getting all the way to No. 4 in the United Kingdom.  It was eventually certified platinum, and has seen numerous reissues in the compact disc era including an expanded edition from Rhino in 2003.  That reissue included a studio recording of “Clap” (which was featured in a live version on the original album) as well as the unique single versions of “Your Move” and “Life Seeker.”

Hello Hooray: Audio Fidelity Preps SACDs for Alice Cooper, Peter, Paul and Mary, Yes’ Jon Anderson and Heart

with 6 comments

Olias of Sunhillow SACDThis February, the Audio Fidelity label continues to grow its collection of stereo hybrid SACDs with four new releases that touch upon classic rock, progressive rock, and vintage folk.

Jon Anderson‘s debut solo album Olias Of Sunhillow was released in the summer of 1976 and climbed the charts to the U.S. Top 50 as well as to an even more impressive No. 8 in Anderson’s U.K. home.  The Yes frontman and multi-instrumentalist utilized a variety of synthesizers, tape loops, unexpected instruments and sound effects to create the album inspired by Roger Dean’s cover artwork for Yes’ 1972 album Fragile as well as the rich literary world of J.R.R. Tolkien.  Anderson’s Olias is named for the titular character, an architect who designs a spacecraft on which the aliens of Sunhillow can travel to a new land.  Audio Fidelity describes the cosmic concept album as showcasing “Anderson’s uncommon gifts for melody and harmony as well as for songwriting. Together with arrangements that veer from the rustic to sci-fi, the music appears to travel through Earth and Space, incarnating the elements of the material and ethereal worlds. The scope of the music is cinematic, freely pursuing concepts to every corner of its vision and fashioning an experience that is as breathtaking for its range as it is for its depth.”  The SACD package replicates the original artwork by artist David Fairbrother Roe.  Kevin Gray has remastered the album at Cohearant Audio.

Alice Cooper - Billion Dollar SACDShock rockers supreme Alice Cooper delivered one of the band’s all-time classics with 1973’s U.S. and U.K. chart-topping Billion Dollar Babies.  Alice’s sixth studio album, the platinum-selling LP produced by Bob Ezrin yielded four Billboard Hot 100 hits including “Elected”, “Hello Hooray,” “Billion Dollar Babies” and “No More Mr. Nice Guy.”  After the album was released, the band embarked on a tour which reportedly broke U.S. box office records previously held by the Rolling Stones despite not meeting revenue projections.  Magician James Randi designed special effects for the spectacularly horrific production.  Building on the success of the previous year’s School’s Out, Billion Dollar Babies (with its songs about everything from dentistry to necrophilia) was the perfect vehicle for Cooper’s hard rock theatre to come alive – or dead.  Audio Fidelity’s SACD edition has been remastered by Steve Hoffman at Stephen Marsh Mastering.

Don’t Deceive Your Free Will At All: New Yes Box Compiles Studio Album Remasters

with 3 comments

1YES_StudioAlbums_CoverIf that recently-released Japanese SACD box is out of your price range, but you really want to get to know the catalogue of prog rockers Yes intensely well, Rhino has a new “studio albums” box you’ll want to order.

The Studio Albums 1969-1987 includes every remastered and expanded album originally released for the Atlantic and ATCO labels over a two-decade period. What started as a dense progressive band featuring the likes of vocalist Jon Anderson, bassist Chris Squire, drummers Bill Bruford and Alan White, guitarists Steve Howe and Trevor Rabin, keyboardists Tony Kaye, Rick Wakeman and Patrick Moraz (and even singer/producer Trevor Horn and keyboardist Geoff Downes, fresh from their time in The Buggles) ultimately gave way to a rock-edged, almost dancefloor-ready sound, starting with classics like the recently-remixed Close to the Edge and Tales from Topographic Oceans and culminating in the worldwide chart and MTV hit “Owner of a Lonely Heart” from 90125 in 1983.

While all of these expanded CD masters have been available since 2003 and 2004, this collection marks the first domestic reissue of the band’s final album for ATCO, 1987’s Big Generator. The record marked a further step in the pop-oriented direction of 90125 – ultimately leading frontman Anderson to pursue a purer prog style, leading to the creation of Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe with his former bandmates. (Nonetheless, that quartet joined forces with the rest of Yes – at the time, Rabin, Kaye, Squire and White – for 1991’s Union, their only album as an octet.) The expanded remaster of Big Generator, first released in Japan in 2009, features five bonus single mixes.

Featuring the typical packaging of a Rhino studio albums box set – mini-LP replica wallets in a clamshell box (with new art from longtime Yes designer Roger Dean) – The Studio Albums 1969-1987 is available on December 24, at which point we’ll have likely found out if Yes got into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The full specs, as well as track lists, are after the jump.

Yes - Close to the EdgeUPDATE (8/6/2013): After the jump, you’ll find full specs on the newly expanded and remixed Close to the Edge, due out in October! And don’t forget our post on Nonsuch from earlier this week.

ORIGINAL POST (6/24/2013): Porcupine Tree’s Steven Wilson has been one of the most prominent proponents of surround sound in recent memory.  The singer/songwriter/guitarist/producer has spearheaded deluxe editions of classic albums from Hawkwind, King Crimson, Jethro Tull and Emerson Lake and Palmer with stunning new 5.1 mixes, and made his own acclaimed 2013 solo album The Raven That Refused to Sing available in high-resolution surround formats, as well.  Over the weekend, Wilson confirmed on his official Facebook page that more exciting projects are on the way from the catalogues of two more iconic bands: Yes and XTC.

Panegyric, the label releasing DGM’s definitive series of King Crimson reissues, will release “archive CD/DVD-A and CD/Blu-ray editions” by both groups, beginning this September with XTC’s Nonsuch (1992) and continuing in October with Yes’ Close to the Edge (1972).  The Yes release will be joined by a new King Crimson title, The Road to Red, focusing on the band’s final North American tour of 1974.

After the jump, we have details on all three titles! Read the rest of this entry »
